Meet Your New 'dBs Presents' Radio Hosts

With the year drawing to a close, get to know our new 'dBs Presents' Radio hosts for 2021.

The opportunity to represent dBs on 1020 radio is one of many fantastic opportunities on offer to dBs students, thanks to the work of our ever-dedicated Employability and Engagement Officer.

For the past year, Joe Valek and Joe Crocker have done a stellar job leading the radio residency, but with the new year and the last two semesters of their degree on the horizon, it’s time to hand over the baton. This year, we’re excited to announce dBs will run two monthly shows on the station: dBs Presents Plymouth and dBs Presents Bristol, which means we’ve appointed four new hosts across our two locations. Naturally, we were brimming with questions for these students. Now it’s your turn to get to know them too. So, without further ado, meet...

What are you studying at dBs and how long have you been with us?

I started studying a Bachelors Degree in Music Production and Sound Engineering in September (2020).

What have you been up to the past few months?

In the past few months, I have established my brand ‘Cloudy’ starting with ‘Cloudy Beats’ as an artist and music producer, ‘Cloudy Pics’ for photography, digital arts and music videography and ‘Cloudy Records’ as my record label which I will be setting up as soon as I have the funding and suitable employees. I have released a five-track EP called ‘Nine’ by Cloudy Beats, which features two up-and-coming artists, including one from dBs named ‘Straight Up Jacob’ and now I am hosting a radio show for dBs Plymouth, which is one of the coolest things to ever happen to me!

What are you most looking forward to about taking over the 1020 radio residency?

I am most looking forward to sharing the artists around me, I know so many individuals who make underrated music and this will be a big push for their careers. I have artists from dBs, Essex, London and even one who I discovered busking in the high street of Plymouth! This is my time to help people gain recognition, there is so much talent that is yet to be discovered and this is where it begins, for all of us.

What are you studying at dBs and how long have you been with us?

I began my journey with dBs Music on the Access course 2018, and am now currently studying for a B/A Hons, in  Electronic Music Production at dBs Music Plymouth. I am in my third year studying at dBs and I absolutely love the place.

What have you been up to the past few months?

For the last few months, I have been studying hard, working on new setups to perform live productions, connecting/controlling keyboards, synths including a variety of other production hardware controllers. My latest studies have included advanced mastering and mixing skills, sound creation research, and hardware production performance.

What are you most looking forward to about taking over the 1020 radio residency?

The takeover !! The opportunity!!! And the fun!!! That's what I am buzzing about.

Being a great platform to get the dBs student network in Plymouth involved, I am looking forward to the unlimited possibilities we can all create together as a team. I plan on hosting some great interviews from our student network, including motivational speakers, with the DJ sets being amazing.

I’m studying Electronic Music Production, currently in my second year, although I was on the access course.

What have you been up to the past few months?

Over the past few months, I have just been trying to boost my production skills, taking advantage of all the artists creating online content due to lockdowns! I’ve also finally moved to Bristol so have been settling in here which I’m really enjoying!

What are you most looking forward to about taking over the 1020 radio residency?

I’m looking forward to coming up with a (hopefully) exciting and interesting show and hearing a lot of exciting new music!

What are you studying at dBs and how long have you been with us?

Currently in my second year, I am studying Sound for Film and TV at dBs Bristol. Having completed the Access to Higher Education course at dBs a few years ago I am really happy to be working towards a degree.

What have you been up to the past few months?

Over the past few months, I have been working on my sound design and also learnt how to mix and master music to a professional standard. I co-run a drum and bass label named 2Houses and we have just announced out 3K EP!

What are you most looking forward to about taking over the 1020 radio residency?

During the 1020 residency, I am most excited about promoting new music, I hope to shed some light on lesser-known up and coming producers. There is so much talent at dBs, I hope that through the show these artists will gain some opportunities within the industry.

You can catch the first episode of dBs Presents Bristol on the 4th December at 13:00 - 15:00 and at the same time on the first Friday of every month moving forwards. dBs Presents Plymouth will air for the first time on the 11th December at 13:00 -15:00 and at the same time on the 2nd Friday of every month. Listen to both at 1020.live.
