Free Software Friday - SPARTA Spatial Audio Plugin Collection

Free Software Friday is our regular Friday feature here at the dBs blog. We dig the depths of the music production and media webosphere and discover what downloadable plugin freebies are worth double clicking each week.

Ambisonics, binaural audio and spatial audio are increasingly popular areas in the world of sound right now, and to meet that demand we can introduce you to SPARTA (Spatial Audio Real-Time Applications); a free collection of spatial audio plugins.

Before we talk a little more about what's on offer here, we should mention that these plugins were designed to work in Reaper, which is one of the better DAWs to work on spatial audio production. It will work in other DAWs, but Reaper is the recommend application.

Developed primarily by the Acoustics Lab at Aalto University, Finland, the SPARTA installer brings together several plugin suites. While there's not enough time to review the contents, we can assure you that there's a lot of tools to try out.

If you've read this far but are still unsure about what ambisonics and binaural/spatial audio refers to, it's the creation of more immersive audio that goes beyond stereo or 5.1 surround sound, which replicates human hearing and can create more realistic and immersive audio.

In the absence of being able to perform binaural recordings, these plugins allow you to recreate real world spaces and simulate an immersive sonic experience within your DAW. Novices of audio production may find these plug-ins and their function a little overwhelming, but if you have some knowledge on binaural audio or are dedicated to understanding the craft this is an excellent resource to develop your skills.

SPARTA is available for Windows, Linux and macOS (VST/64-bit) and can be downloaded for free using the link below.
