Free Software Friday - SampleScience Toy Keyboard

Free Software Friday is our regular Friday feature here at the dBs Music blog. We dig the depths of the music production and media webosphere and discover what downloadable plugin freebies are worth double clicking each week.

Despite covering both their free Analog Waveforms and Resonance plugins, we somehow missed another free offering that recently came out from SampleScience: the Toy Keyboard.

Taking its sounds from the memorable, if somewhat flawed, Yamaha PSR-78 home keyboard, Toy Keyboard brings up some rather nostalgic memories and offers an understated and retro feel to your productions.

To keep the plugin light, each preset is made of one sampled note and then stretched over the keyboard so you can play different notes. This gives it that retro, lo-fi sound that we mentioned, so if you're looking for something imperfect this is a great plugin to experiment with. Leads and pads have been looped to provide infinite sustain.

There are 73 presets in total, plus 1 drum kit. Effects range from Multi-LFOs, room reverb, highpass/lowpass filters, amplitude range controls and three voice modes.

Toy Keyboard is available to download for free or with an optional donation using the link below and is compatible in 32-bit & 64-bit VST/VST3/AU plugin format for Windows & macOS.
