Free Software Friday is our regular Friday feature here at the dBs Music blog. We dig the depths of the music production and media webosphere and discover what downloadable plugin freebies are worth double clicking each week.
It was only a couple of weeks ago that we were sharing our fondness for Caelum Audio's Tape Cassette 2; a great little plugin that brought some character to your audio with its infidelities. This week we're back on that degraded audio fix again thanks to SampleScience's new Cassette Roads plugin.
The sounds on offer here were created by recording an electric piano onto an audio cassette, then resampled back to the computer. The result is full of character and wonderful idiosyncrasies making it ideal for lofi, hip hop and vaporwave productions.
It sounds great straight out of the box, but there are several additional controls to tweak it and discover new palettes. These include high/low-pass filters, a reverb and syncable LFO module, which can modulate pitch and create a close emulation to the wobbliness of an old tape recorder. There's also an ADSR envelope, preamp, portamento control plus polyphonic, monophonic and legato voice modes for further experimentation.
Cassette Roads is available for both PC and Mac (32-bit & 64-bit VST/VST3/AU) and can be downloaded for free using the link below, though you can make a donations are very much welcome too.
