Free Software Friday is our regular Friday feature here at the dBs blog. We dig the depths of the music production and media webosphere and discover what downloadable plugin freebies are worth double clicking each week.
Frequent readers of Free Software Friday will know that we're more than partial to a dose of nostalgia. Despite this, we somehow missed an excellent collaboration between SampleScience and Bedroom Producers Blog at the beginning of 2021 in the form of GB DrumBox; a Game Boy inspired rompler.
Developed by SampleScience, GB DrumBox is packed with 12 drum kits, each featuring 8 Game Boy samples that were produced by Bedroom Producers Blog. Across the eight channels, users can create their own custom kit sound using the volume, pan, and decay time controls. There's also a filter cutoff, reverb, attack and modulation controls that are applied globally.
It should be noted that as the samples are directly taken from the Game Boy, that the usage is limited to private use and cannot be used for tracks you intend to release. We've also seen that some people have experienced issues with the MIDI mapping across multiple DAWs. Not great caveats, but when you're paying nothing it's hard to feel like you're losing out.
GB DrumBox is available for Windows and macOS (VST/VST3/AU) and can be downloaded for free using the link below, where you can also download the individual samples used within the plugin.
