Free Software Friday - Mixed in Key: Satellite Plugins 2.0

Free Software Friday is our regular Friday feature here at the dBs Music blog. We dig the depths of the music production and media webosphere and discover what downloadable plugin freebies are worth double clicking each week.

Online collaboration is by no means new, but it's certainly more prevalent in the wake of the ongoing global pandemic. While sending hefty audio stems across the net or even using services such as BandLab has helped creativity to continue, it's not the smoothest of processes. However, online collaboration could be about to change with the arrival of Satellite Plugins 2.0.

Created by Mixed in Key, Satellite Plugins 2.0 at its most basic is a cross-platform collaboration tool that removes the need to bounce stems to share with others and provides an almost instantaneous sharing of ideas. This means if you're using FL Studio and the person you're creating with is using Logic Pro, you can still write in your respective DAWs and share ideas without any issue.

Available as a VST, AU or AAX instrument plugin, Satellite can be added to your DAW of choice much like any other. You can then begin assigning it to any track you want to share and start compiling stems into a project hub.  You can record audio from software, hardware and MIDI sources, and that MIDI data can then be used by someone else to trigger a different instrument.

Inviting collaborators is done within the project hub of the plugin, and can either be done by adding their email address or sending the project link. Ideas recorded into the plugin show up almost instantly and can be previewed within the plugin. You can then download all or just a snippet of each part to add to your own DAW.

Satellite Plugins 2.0 and all its features is free for a limited time in response to the ongoing challenges posed by COVID-19. There will be a permanent free version with very few limitations, and a 'Pro' level in the future. There's no further information regarding what those limitations for the free level will be, or how much the pro level will cost. Before those changes come in though, this is well worth checking out if you're currently bouncing and sending stems all the time with other artists.

Satellite Plugins 2.0 is currently available to download for free for both Windows and macOS. Compatible DAWs across both systems are as follows:
