Free Software Friday - Dodo MIDI

Free Software Friday is our regular Friday feature here at the dBs blog. We dig the depths of the music production and media webosphere and discover what downloadable plugin freebies are worth double clicking each week.

Dodo Bird has released Dodo MIDI; a free plugin that turns audio files into MIDI.

One of the most common ways to note a musical idea is to hum or sing it into your phone. It's a great way to capture not just the notes, but the rhythm and feel. However, if you're not particularly good at figuring out what notes you've hummed/sung, it can take an age to put that idea into your DAW. While by no means a revolutionary idea, Dodo MIDI is a useful tool made all the better by the lack of price tag.

That's just one example of how Dodo MIDI can be useful. Take any audio that you have, be that recorded vocals or instruments, for example; run them through Dodo MIDI and then play through a synthesiser for a cool double track with minimum effort. It can even be used in a live performance as a way to add some new dimensions to your set.

As a tool, it's not going to nail it every time and you will still need to refine the end results, but Dodo MIDI does a pretty good job of picking up on the articulations of the original audio. When the price is that good though, it's definitely worth experimenting.

Dodo MIDI is available for Windows and macOS (64-bit VST2/VST3) and can be downloaded for free using the link below.
