Free Software Friday is our regular Friday feature here at the dBs Music blog. We dig the depths of the music production and media webosphere and discover what downloadable plugin freebies are worth double clicking each week.
Ensuring your drums have power and can cut through the mix is a common problem in production, with a long list of ways to achieve it. One of the new options comes from Cymatics, whose brand new Diablo Lite drum enhancer plugin offers up some serious power.
The UI is nice and simple here, not to mention striking. Though its not freely resizable, you can set the plugin to small, medium or large depending on your preference. The controls are kept to a minimum and feature just five knobs to work with; input, output, mix, punch and clip, the latter two are where Diablo shows off its potential.
Punch is a transient shaper designed to get your drum signal punching through the mix, while Clip offers both a soft and hard mode, allowing you to add some aggression to the signal to further help you drums cut through.
We haven't had a huge amount of time to play around with Diablo, but our early impressions were positive and offered immediate results with just a small amount of tinkering. You can use the link below to hear some before and after examples on a few samples to hear what its capable of.
Diablo Lite is available for both Windows and macOS and can be downloaded for free using the link below. The plugin is currently supported in Logic Pro X, Ableton Live, FL Studio, Reason and Pro Tools.
