Free Software Friday is our regular Friday feature here at the dBs Music blog. We dig the depths of the music production and media webosphere and discover what downloadable plugin freebies are worth double clicking each week.
Auburn Sounds' plugins are always well worth your time and money, and possess an excellent visual aesthetic to boot. With the release of their latest noise gate plugin, Renegate, Auburn continue the trend of releasing both a paid full version and a feature-limited free version, and honestly, we're amazed by how much the free version includes.
Dubbed as a 'smooth workhorse gate', we're inclined to agree with Auburn Sounds. Renegate Free is extremely smooth, not to mention quick and easy to use, and that simplicity comes from a rather complicated system working under the surface.
It features program-dependent hysteresis, enabling the plugin to detect unwanted noise and prevents signals that regularly cross over the threshold from causing the gate to open. This is paired with a built-in look ahead feature so you hit the transient 100% of the time.
Renegate Free also features program-dependent Auto-Release to further smooth out the sound, as well as an expansive 43 band psychoacoustic auditory model for envelope detection.
Should you wish to expand the toolset and buy the full version, you'll find Alternative ways to apply Gain Reduction, namely with a 1-pole lowpass or highpass, oversampling, a raw knob to reinstate digital grit and a built-in step sequencer, which turns the plugin into a rhythmic effect.
Renegate is available for Windows, Linux and macOS (32-bit & 64-bit, VST/AU/AAX/LV2) and can be downloaded as a free plugin or a full paid version ($29 intro price, $39 after) using the link below.
