Free Software Friday - Animoog Z

Free Software Friday is our regular Friday feature here at the dBs blog. We dig the depths of the music production and media webosphere and discover what downloadable plugin freebies are worth double clicking each week.

After ten years, Moog Music has released Animoog Z; the new and improvedfollow-up to their much-revered Animoog iOS.

For some of you, apps have always possessed the high-fidelity we come to expect, but back in 2011 the era of the smartphone was still in its infancy. When the Animoog arrived in ten long years ago, it set the bar incredibly high for what could be expected from a music-based app.

We're now inundated with high-quality music apps, but Moog Music has once again proven their clout as Animoog Z builds on the original in every way to deliver something joyous to use and genuinely innovative.

Before we continue, it's important to note that Animoog Z comes in both a free version and a paid version (£17.99). We've listed the full feature set below, so be aware that the free version will be feature-limited.

The biggest improvement here is the addition of the 'Z axis', allowing you to view and manipulate wavetables in a three-dimensional space. Parameters can now be changed across each axis to create some phenomenally rich and interesting sounds - each of which is based off Moog samples.

Animoog Z now supports 16 voices of polyphony, a timbre editor that allows you to create new soundscapes in 3D space, expanded modulation slots, new LFOs, 5 effects modules including a looper so you can layer up your ideas and more.

Not only is Animoog Z iOS and macOS compatible, but it also supports AUv3 so you can easily connect it to applications such as Logic Pro X or GarageBand. The macOS plugin is compatible with major DAWs such as Logic, Live and Pro Tools and it can be used to alter the sound of other plugins.

Now, while we're well aware this is about free software, this is one plugin where we'd be lying if we said shelling out for the full version wasn't absolutely worth it. That being said, there's still a lot you can do with the free version.

Animoog Z is available for iOS app (iPhone, iPad) and macOS and can be downloaded for free using the link below, where you can also purchase the full version.
