Pioneer TORAIZ SP-16 Sampling workstation

The DJ booth is about to become even more creative, with a brand new, standalone, sampling workstation from Pioneer that's ready to buddy up with your CDJ's and mixer. Meet the TORAIZ SP-16...

Earlier in the week, an email landed in our inbox which asked, "What do you get if you cross Pioneer with Dave Smith?" We happily speculated, but nobody predicted a new sampler which included Dave Smith's legendary analogue filters.

Meet The new Pioneer TORAIZ SP-16 - a Sampling workstation that sync's perfectly with Pioneer's industry standard CDJ range.

It's the first time that Pioneer has delved into music production-orientated gear, that also works for live performance and we can't help thinking NI's Maschine. But with no laptop required and DJ booth integration via PRO DJ Link, it seems that Pioneer are after both the DJ and the producer in a single product.

The TORAIZ SP-16 has a large 7-inch full-colour touch screen on the front, bags of onboard pads and controllers and there's a 2GB library of Loopmasters samples that come pre loaded into the 8GB of memory. Connecting up the TORAIZ is via the Pioneer PRO DJ Link, USB or MIDI with the option of sync via MIDI clock and there's two quarter-inch jack inputs and a massive eight quarter-inch jack outputs. The Dave Smith filters are based on the Dave Smith's critically acclaimed Prophet-6 synthesizer and feature controls for drive, cutoff and resonance. As you can see from the gallery below, the full waveform display, multi-coloured pads, controllers and connectivity make this one very exciting product.

  • Create up to 256 patterns using the 16-step sequencer
  • 7-inch full-colour touch screen with detailed sample information
  • Multicoloured Performance Pads with Velocity Mode
  • 16-track real-time playback engine
  • Amp envelope and time stretching
  • 8GB flash memory
  • Dave Smith high-pass and low-pass filters
  • Pro DJ Link and MIDI clock for synced one-shots and patterns
  • Touch strip with Pitch Bend
  • Comes with 2GB of Loopmasters sounds already on board

It's currently priced online around £1279 but being a stand alone unit, with hopefully the usual Pioneer build-quality, we're gearing up for this to be a big product this year.
