6 of the best free instruments for Native Instruments Kontakt

First up it's worth noting the difference between the free Kontakt player and the full version as some of the list below will only be compatible with the latest full version of NI's Kontakt software. If you don't already have it, the free Kontakt player is a worthy download on its own with 50 free instruments included, but below are a few more internet finds that you should definitely check out!

drummica1. Sennheiser Drummica

 This is a hidden gem, and not only a great instrument, but a great educational tool for learning about mic techniques and what type of mics to use when recording drums. There's over 13,000 recorded snippets here, with built in MIDI grooves, a mixer with compressor and transient designer and even more tweakable controls. It works in the NI Kontakt Player too, so you don't even need the full version on Kontakt! Mega!

Handclap Boss2. Handclap Boss

Based on the classic Boss HC2 hardware with a clap circuitry similar to the 808 and 909, the original HC2 had extra tweaking options. Here the claps and  functions are similar but with even more options making Handclap Boss not only great for classic clap sounds, but for pops, clicks and other tripped out percussions.

This is another unbelievable freebie, with 311, 44 kHz, 24 bit, stereo samples, weighing in at 465 MB this instrument packs in so many sounds and a huge amount of sculpting possibilities. There are a pile of presets, EQ and compression, plus ADSR, tune, Pan and room controls on each channel too!

Pallette5. Primary Colors Palette

This is labelled as a "small" sampling of the larger Palette Orchestral Series, but features strings, woodwinds and brass ensembles. Weighing in at 1.6GB  it's recorded using Red Room Audio's True Ensemble Recording technique, with one microphone position and an abbreviated set of articulations. 3 dynamic layers and up to 7 round robins included though, the same as in the larger product.

Over 280 samples of an often overlooked drum machine. The Korg KPR-77. With all samples recorded directly to 1/4" analogue tape there's some lush processing across three different kits, tape clean, tape saturated and a driven kit. The samples have 3 velocity layers per sound and there are 5 round-robin variations helping to capture the unique quirks of the original hardware where often, no two trigged samples will sound the same.
