Free Software Friday - Spitfire Audio LABS

Free Software Friday is our regular Friday feature here at the dBs Music blog. We dig the depths of the music production and media webosphere and discover what downloadable plugin freebies are worth double clicking each week.

Back in 2018 library music titans Spitfire Audio resurrected LABS, a project designed to offer a slice of their full work for free. For anyone that's encountered Spitfire Audio before, it's no secret that their excellent libraries come with a hefty, yet justified price tag, so the return of this initiative was welcome news. Since its return, 9 free software instruments have been released, and they're all worth experimenting with.

The list of instruments to choose from includes: Soft Piano, Strings, Drums, Amplified Cello Quartet, Electric Piano, Charango (Andean Guitar-like instrument), Choir, Synth Pads and Frozen Strings. Some of these instruments were the beginnings of fully fledged sample libraries - Frozen Strings would inspire Albion V Tundra - whilst others are just recording experiments that birthed interesting instruments.

Each instrument sounds fantastic, as is to be expected from Spitfire, but they also share a uniform and elegant interface that keeps things simple so you can dive straight in. To get started with LABS you'll need to create an account, download the Spitfire Audio App which allows you to download the individual instruments and then load into your DAW.

LABS is an on-going project with new instruments being added all the time, and is available for both Windows and Mac users. Download the Spitfire Audio App and instruments from the link below.
