Free Software Friday - Quiet Music Serenity

Free Software Friday is our regular Friday feature here at the dBs blog. We dig the depths of the music production and media webosphere and discover what downloadable plugin freebies are worth double clicking each week.

Quiet Music's remit has always been to provide free tools to help create peaceful and meditative moods through sound. With the release of Serenity, the developer has created an easy-to-use plugin that fuses both instrumental sounds and field recordings.

Serenity is made of 10 different layers of sound; 4 layers of pad sounds and textures recorded with the Deepmind analogue synth and 6 layers of high-quality field recordings including crickets, birds, rain, wind, waves and running water - think babbling brook.

There's a surprising amount of control for shaping the sounds produced by Serenity, ranging from Low Pass / High Pass filters, LFO controls, reverb and ADSR. We spent a short while playing with Serenity and found ourselves quickly finding a spark of inspiration from the sounds on offer. While predominantly meant for peaceful compositions, the lower register notes created some excellent dark and moody tones.

Should you wish to expand the range of sounds from the field recordings, we'd recommend checking out Quiet Music's Rain Maker plugin alongside this, which has an extensive array of great sounding recordings that can be paired with Serenity.

Serenity is available to download for both Windows and macOS (32 / 64-bit, VST/VST3/AU) for free or by donation using the link below.
