Free Software Friday - FrozenPlain Music Box Suite Free

Free Software Friday is our regular Friday feature here at the dBs Music blog. We dig the depths of the music production and media webosphere and discover what downloadable plugin freebies are worth double clicking each week.

It's that time of year again when the horror-tinged tones become more frequent, and what better accompaniment than FrozenPlain's new Music Box Suite free plugin.

Being the free edition you'll only find a single music box on offer here - a multi-sampled Victorian music box - but it's really got a lot of character to work with. Once you play a single note, you'll quickly understand why it's arrived at this time of year, but there's more than meets the eye.

You can start tweaking the sound with the detune, pitch and pan controls, but then there are a further 9 controls to affect the sound, from distortion, chorus and delay to compression, reverb and bit crush.

On top of this, there are three separate strips within the sampler where you can run three concurrent music box samples, but blend their different tweaked sounds. There are even more controls to shape your sound here, including ADSR, EQ and LFO.

In the same way that NI's Kontakt player works, FrozenPlain's Mirage sampler is the home for the Music Box Suite, as well as Wraith (dark and expressive pads) and Phoenix (smooth synth strings and choirs), which are additional libraries that can be purchased.

Using Mirage is super easy, and considering we'd not parted with a penny, we were impressed by how much was on offer here.

Music Box Suite Free is available for Windows and macOS (32-bit & 64-bit VST/AU) for free using the link below. An email address is required to complete the download.
