Free Software Friday is our regular Friday feature here at the dBs Music blog. We dig the depths of the music production and media webosphere and discover what downloadable freebies are worth double clicking each week.
Here's a simple-but-sexy mi preamplifier and fixed frequency program equalizer from Analog Obsession. Based around a simple design from the 1950s, this plugin for both mac and PC emulates the circuit design and components with two-band EQ. Both bands have boost and cut with the low band fixed at 100Hz and high band at 12kHz with a tube stage for true, emulated analogue warmth.
This may not be the most flexible plugin that you will have in your collection, but it's this lack of tweaking options and flexibility that gives it true realism to the huge bits of hardware from the 1950s it emulates. This might not be a plugin that you're able to use in every project, but its genuine modelling and retro tone works wonders on the right material. Anyway, it's free, so what are you waiting for?
